Health . Prevention . What does the Guru Granth Sahib say

Eating

We should be thankful for our meals1 and eat a simple meal when at all possible and avoid indulgence.   Every morsel of food, every breath, each day of life that is destined for each individual is finite2.  For example, one can consume bags full of sweets and desserts over a few days or ration them and enjoy them over time.   Keeping in mind that moderation is stressed in all aspects of life and especially with food3,4

1.  With every breath and morsel of food, I will not forget Him, O Siblings of Destiny; I behold Him ever-present.
Guru Arjan Dev, Raag Sorath, 639
 2.  He has counted all the days and the breaths, and placed them in people's destiny; they do not increase or decrease one little bit.
Guru Arjan Dev, Raag Gauree, 254
 3.  Sleep little, and eat little; O Nanak, this is the essence of wisdom.
Guru Nanak Dev, Raag Raamkalee , 939
 4.  Eat less food and drink little water.
Bhai Gurdaas, Vaars Bhai Gurdaas, 20
